What is Family Practice?
Family Practice is
now a recognized specialty of medicine. We are similar to the old-time
"general practitioners" in that we care for children and
adults of all ages and cover a broad range of medical problems. We
focus upon the person as a whole within the context of the family
and community. We perform a wide array of services and procedures,
including the following:
Health Maintenance:
Well baby and child check-ups, including newborn hospital
visits
School physicals
Employment physicals
Annual physical examinations
Cancer screenings: breast exams, prostate exams, pap
smears and colon cancer screenings
Patient education
Birth Control methods including IUD's and Cervical Caps
Pregnancy planning
Illness Care:
Full range of medical problems for children and adults
including hospital and nursing home care.
Office Procedures:
Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT)
EKG
Urinalysis, Cholesterol screening, Blood Sugar screening
and other minor lab tests
Hearing Screening and tympanometry
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
Minor skin surgery, including lacerations
Colposcopy
For any type of medical problem we suggest that you check
with us first. We can help you decide what services are needed and, if so,
where the procedure would best be done.

Phone
Calls
Most routine
questions can be handled by
our nursing staff. If the staff cannot answer your question, the doctoes will be
happy to return your call. Lengthy or complex questions may require an office visit.
The doctors return calls between patients, during lunch, and at the end of
the day. The staff is trained to interrupt the doctors during patient visits only for
emergencies or for calls from other healthcare
providers.

Prescription Refills
We are happy to
refill ongoing prescriptions during normal office hours. Please call
the office at least a week prior to running out. Have available the drug
name, what you are currently taking, and your pharmacy name and telephone
number. Please understand that some prescriptions cannot be
refilled without an office visit for your safety and to assure sound
medical practice. We cannot refill a prescription that is more than a
year old.

Referrals
If we cannot perform a
service or lab test that you require, we will help arrange an appropriate
referral. We want to respect your preference for specific facilities or
healthcare providers. However, some insurance plans may require you to go
to specific labs or providers. Unfortunately, "out of plan" referrals
are allowed by insurers only for medical necessity, not for personal
preference or convenience. We will try to notify you of all test results,
even if they are normal. If we have not contacted you within a week of
having the test performed, please notify us.

Hospital
Care
We have admitting privileges at Inland Hospital and
Maine General Medical Center for both children and adults. We make daily
rounds in the hospital - more frequently if needed. On weekends, holidays
or vacations, we will make arrangements for another healthcare provider to
see you if we are unable to make rounds. If you require admission
elsewhere, we will help to make the necessary
arrangements.

Insurance and Billing
We
participate with most major insurance plans in the area.
We accept medical assignment and will send a bill for co-insurance and deductibles
not covered by primary or secondary insurances. For managed
care plans, we collect co-pays at the time of visit and bill the
remainder to insurance. If you have any questions or special financial
needs, please bring them to our attention. In this age of "managed
care," many insurers have strict rules regarding eligibility,
referrals and use of emergency rooms. Please note that it is your
responsibility to follow these rules if you belong to one of these
plans. We are sorry that we cannot authorize "retroactive"
(after-the-fact) referrals. To avoid bad feelings and unpaid bills
always contact us first before using any service.
